To turn on or energize. Pertains to outputs (including logical outputs).

A system that can individually identify specific initiating and output devices such as a detector location in the event of activation.

Authority having jurisdiction is a government body, organization, office, or individual having the power to enforce and/or interpret laws, codes, and rules. Also responsible for approving equipment, installations or procedures (e.g.: Fire Marshal, building inspector).

The state of a fire alarm initiating device that has detected a CO gas, smoke, or fire condition.

Backlit liquid crystal display, 240 × 320 pixels, 24 lines of 40 characters. The LCD provides supplemental information relevant to the current condition of the control panel.

A visual and/or audible system component that indicates an alarm or other condition. Annunciators are typically located at building entrances or at emergency control locations. May consist of LEDs and/or LCDs and may take the form of a graphic representation of the building. Annunciators may also incorporate features such as system common controls, auxiliary fan and damper controls, and paging controls.

Able to be detected by the human ear.

A fire alarm system that uses voice or electronic tone transmissions to notify occupants of alarm events.

Modules that connect to the electronics chassis and control display modules.

During normal operation, a small predetermined amount of current flows through a system. By placing an end of line resistor across the load, the circuit can be supervised. When a short occurs this current increases to indicate a short circuit. When an open occurs there is no current flow to indicate an open circuit. Logic is provided onboard the supervised circuit to annunciate these troubles. A ground fault is also detected in this way.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that is toxic to humans and animals in high concentrations.

A Windows-based program used to enter and modify information contained in the system.

Conventional devices are non-intelligent, normally-opened or normally-closed detectors and modules which only determine the zone (area) of occurrence. In these systems, the processing intelligence is onboard the IDC controller module.

In a conventional fire alarm system, components are all wired to the same cable that connects them to a fire alarm control unit. When a fire alarm component produces a signal, there is no way to know which component it is in the building.

Modules, circuits, buttons, or LEDs that exist on the electronics chassis and all addressable devices connected by field wiring.

EOL stands for the “End of Line” device used to complete the Class B circuit. This device is normally a resistor and sometimes a relay, depending on the application. The EOL completes the supervisory circuit permitting a small, constant current flow in the circuit to monitor integrity.

A trigger that results in a status change of a signal in a life safety system that activates outputs according to specific software.

A collection of devices that is treated as a single entity for programming purposes. Groups can have messages and responses over and above the messages and responses of the individual group members.

A supervised input circuit that connects detectors, manual stations, etc. to the FACU.

A signal generated by a field device and sent to the control panel for evaluation and responses as determined by the system database. Inputs to the system are detectors, modules, and switches.

A sensor or output device incorporating a microprocessor and logic that is capable of making alarm/output decisions independent of a centralized host processor.

International Organization for Standardization is an independent, non-governmental membership organization and the world's largest developer of voluntary International Standards.

An operating mode where a device’s state follows the state of the initiating stimulus. Upon removal of the stimulus, the state does not return to its previous condition. Human intervention is required to reset.

Depending on the system's design, the supervisory point may be latching, meaning the panel must be reset to clear the supervisory condition, or non-latching, meaning the indicator automatically goes out when the condition has cleared. However, some panels require a reset regardless of whether the supervisory point is latching or non-latching.

Liquid crystal display (LCD) is a flat panel electronic visual display that uses the light modulating properties of liquid crystals. Its low electrical power consumption enables it to be used in battery-powered electronic equipment.

An indication that the equipment, material, or service meets the identified standards or has been tested and found suitable for the specified purpose and is included in a publication of a standards organization.

A one-way emergency communication system capable of simultaneously sounding three or more independent audio signals (e.g., live page, alarm message, alert message, elevator cab message, stairwell message, etc.) to different areas of the building in response to an alarm condition.

National Fire Protection Association is an organization that is internationally recognized as a definitive authority on fire protection. NFPA publishes and administers the development of codes, standards, and other materials concerning all aspects of fire safety for the United States.

A signal generated by the system based upon responses defined in the system database and sent to external field devices. Outputs are LEDs and modules.

A number code used to set the configuration and operation of a module. The personality code is either factory installed or must be downloaded into modules for proper operation.

An input or output point that is not a physical device (e.g., ground fault and communication fault notifications)

A manually initiated alarm system function that returns the system and attached devices/systems back to normal operating condition.

A serial communications format normally used for serial peripheral devices (e.g., printers) from a computer.

A signaling device such as a strobe, beacon, or flashing light that stimulates the sense of sight to indicate an alarm condition.
